We need to talk about the wonderful lady and incredible designer/ funky artist that is EMILY COXHEAD! If you follow me on Instagram you’ll see that I repost a lot of Emily’s work because it’s all so cheery – her slogan is ‘sprinkling a tiny bit of happiness all over the planet’ and she definitely does that.
This is Emily – I’ve noticed she is always dressed like a rainbow and I am CHEERING for it.
Emily is the creator of The Happy Newspaper, a newspaper dedicated to sharing loads of the sparkly, GOOD news we rarely hear about on TV – from every day heroes to Sri Lanka being declared Malaria free; just bloody wonderful stuff. The newspaper first started in December 2015 when she opened a Kickstarter campaign to helped fund it and reached her target within two days, thanks to the generosity of 73 lovely people. At the minute, Emily designs, edits and packages the WHOLE thing herself from her tiny office at home in North West England – what a task. Perhaps one of the most incredible things about The Happy Newspaper is that since it started, it has been read by over 3,000 people across the world.
In a world where the news is always negative, Emily shares some of the human goodness. I’m not denying that the big, dark matters need to be spoken about and tackled, but in a society with an increasing awareness of mental health, I think The Happy News is a really marvellous thing. I know it always makes me feel better looking at happy things and hearing uplifting stories when I feel low and I’d imagine a lot of people are the same. One of my favourite things about all of this is that Emily sometimes goes around leaving copies of The Happy Newspaper in gloomy places – like the tube and hospital waiting rooms – to spread some smiles.
Emily is also the creative mind behind the Manchester Wonderwall of Love, following the tragic bombing at the Ariana Grande concert in 2017. She encouraged people to leave notes of love, pay their respects and spread some colour while the city was in such a dark and devastated place. It had such an astounding result which is Happy News in itself. It’s so heartwarming to look at the notes and see the comments people have left, trying to show their support and sending their love to people involved. Things like this make me so proud to be human and remind me of how much I love people.
As well as working on The Happy Newspaper, Emily designs her own cards which are stocked in lots of places across the UK, before I even knew of Emily or The Happy Newspaper, I’d seen a couple of the designs in a shop and thought ‘ah! what a sunny card!’ because anything with colour and sparkles gets my vote, and then I found her Instagram! There are some just generally snazzy things on there, I’m a big fan of the ‘you’re the tits’ compliment – what lofty praise. Every time I see it I think ‘YES, I AM THE TITS’ so big up Emily for that mantra of empowerment, sadly, I can’t shout it as I enter my exams this week, but oh well, got to keep on keepin’ on, as they say… Her Instagram is so great to follow if you just want the occasional burst of brightness to cheer up your day!
You can sprinkle some extra happiness into your life by following Emily on Twitter and Instagram, checking out her website and checking out The Happy Newspaper – treat ya self to some joy and subscribe!
While we’re on the subject of happiness, did you see my previous post about my ultimate happy playlist?
Stacks of love,
P.S. Big thanks to Emily for letting me use photos from her Instagram in this piece. This post is not sponsored/a paid for advertorial for Emily or The Happy News – I just think it’s a wonderful thing that more people should know about!
